In contradiction to the doctrine of karma, the Bible teaches that, on earth, men often do not receive fair or just rewards for their lives. It is matter, life, mind, intelligence, bliss and food. The avatar doctrine is defended against critics who do not know that the revealed Lord has also a higher nature in which all things are sustained. Krishna now says that the way of devotion is not only easier but better; those who worship him in faith and love are considered the most perfect in yoga. It takes up chapters 25 through 42of that book. In the Katha Upanishad there is an ancient story of a descent into the underworld. This is but one aspect, though a real one, of his might, and since God is infinite he can never be fully seen in the finite, nor ever identified, with it. The masses longed for a god of human sympathies, even though he were a Bacchus. That the soul after death could recall its past existence might seem evidence of the continuation of a real personality from one life to the next; though the Buddhists have denied this while they still maintain the idea of the round of births and rebirths.
As we understand this and begin to think and act accordingly, we become detached from the importance of this life. But these are far post-upanishadic ideas. When you understand such concepts, you begin to notice common references to them. A popular image is that of the soul as lord of the chariot which is the body, with the intellect as the charioteer and mind as the reins. To the Hindu, therefore, punishment consists of continuing to exist on earth. The Biblical emphasis is constantly on the creating power of God, and this overshadows speculation about the nature of man.
